Understanding the issue of universal sovereignty and why Jehovah permits evil for now
The account of Job reveals a key reason God allows suffering. Satan challenged God by claiming that humans only serve him for selfish reasons: 'Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not put up a protective hedge around him… everything that he has? But, for a change, stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.' (Job 1:9-11) Satan raised a question about the integrity of human worshippers — a question that had to be answered.
When Satan said in Eden 'you will not surely die' (Genesis 3:4), he was calling God a liar and suggesting that humans could live independently of God. These challenges to God's right to rule and to the loyalty of his worshippers could not be settled instantly — they required time and human experience to resolve completely.
God is allowing time for humans to demonstrate that they can remain loyal under test, and to let the results of independence from God be fully seen. Peter writes: 'Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire anyone to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.' (2 Peter 3:9)
God's permission of suffering is temporary. His purpose for the earth — a paradise free of pain and death — has never changed. The suffering we see now is not proof of God's indifference but of the consequences of human independence from divine guidance. Soon, God will 'bring to ruin those ruining the earth.' (Revelation 11:18)
