Scriptural proof that the holy spirit is God's active force, not a person
A person cannot be poured out, divided into portions, or used to fill people — but the holy spirit can. At Pentecost, 'they were all filled with holy spirit.' (Acts 2:4) God promised through Joel: 'I will pour out some of my spirit on every sort of flesh.' (Acts 2:17) You pour out a force or a substance, not a person.
Jesus told his disciples they would 'be baptized in holy spirit.' (Acts 1:5) People are immersed in water, not in a person. These expressions — filled with, poured out, baptized in — consistently describe the holy spirit as a force, not an individual.
Jehovah has a name. Jesus has a name. If the holy spirit were a co-equal person of a triune God, it would also have a personal name — yet none is given anywhere in Scripture. In Revelation's vision of the throne, the Father is on the throne and the Lamb (Jesus) is beside him — there is no third person represented. (Revelation 7:10)
At Jesus' baptism, the holy spirit appeared as a dove — not as a person. (Matthew 3:16) When Stephen was about to die, 'he gazed into heaven and caught sight of God's glory and of Jesus standing at God's right hand.' (Acts 7:55) He saw two persons — the Father and the Son. No third person was visible.
Numbers 11:25 describes how Jehovah 'took away some of the spirit that was on him [Moses] and put it on each of the 70 elders.' A person cannot be split into 70 portions. Elisha asked for 'two parts' of Elijah's spirit. (2 Kings 2:9) The holy spirit operates in measures and degrees — language that applies to energy or force, not personality.
Paul wrote that spiritual gifts are 'the work of one and the same spirit, distributing to each person individually just as it wills.' (1 Corinthians 12:11) The spirit distributes according to God's will. It is the instrument of God's purpose, not an independent mind making separate decisions.
