Holy Spirit — Person or Force?

The Bible shows the holy spirit is God's active force, not a third person

God's Active Force

The holy spirit is Jehovah God's active force — the power he uses to accomplish his will. At creation, 'God's active force was moving about over the surface of the waters.' (Genesis 1:2) This force empowered prophets, guided apostles, and worked miracles. It is not described as a separate God-person with personality.

When Jesus was baptized, 'the heavens were opened up and he saw God's spirit descending like a dove.' (Matthew 3:16) A dove is a symbol of gentleness and peace — the spirit here is portrayed as a force or influence, not as a third divine being standing beside the Father and Son.

Why the Holy Spirit Is Not a Person

Persons have names; the holy spirit has none. Persons originate actions; the holy spirit is consistently described as something poured out, sent, or given — never as someone who independently initiates. Acts 2:17 says: 'I will pour out some of my spirit on every sort of flesh.' You pour a substance, not a person.

The gifts of the holy spirit — wisdom, faith, healing, speaking in tongues — are distributed by God's power, not by a third divine individual making independent decisions. Paul writes that 'all of these are the work of one and the same spirit, distributing to each person as it wills' (1 Corinthians 12:11) — but this reflects the spirit's alignment with God's will, not separate personhood.
