Scriptural evidence connecting the angel of Jehovah, Michael the archangel, and Jesus Christ
Michael is identified as 'one of the foremost princes' who came to help Daniel's angelic messenger. (Daniel 10:13) He is later called 'the great prince who is standing in behalf of your people.' (Daniel 12:1) His role is that of a warrior-prince who champions Jehovah's cause and defends God's chosen ones — a role that perfectly matches the prehuman Jesus.
Jude 9 identifies Michael as 'the archangel' — the chief angel. Since Scripture names only one archangel, and since the resurrected Jesus 'descends from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel's voice' (1 Thessalonians 4:16), the connection is clear: Jesus holds the archangel position — he is Michael.
Revelation 12:7-9 describes the decisive heavenly war: 'Michael and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled.' The dragon — Satan — was hurled down to earth. Elsewhere in Revelation, it is Jesus Christ who is the conquering King riding a white horse, leading the armies of heaven. (Revelation 19:11-16) The commander of heaven's armies in both passages is the same person.
Jesus told his disciples: 'I saw Satan already fallen like lightning from heaven.' (Luke 10:18) This is consistent with Michael casting Satan out. Before coming to earth, Jesus existed as a mighty spirit being — 'the firstborn of all creation.' (Colossians 1:15) His prehuman name in heaven was Michael; his earthly name, given at birth, is Jesus.
Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, 'the angel of Jehovah' appears as God's chief representative — not merely one of many angels, but a singular figure who speaks with divine authority. He appeared to Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:2), guided Israel through the wilderness (Exodus 23:20-21), and blocked Balaam's path to protect God's people. (Numbers 22:22-35)
God said of this angel: 'My name is in him.' (Exodus 23:21) This angel carried Jehovah's authority in a unique way. Paul identified the spiritual rock that accompanied Israel as Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:4) The angel of Jehovah who led and protected Israel was the prehuman Jesus — Michael — serving as Jehovah's primary agent long before his birth in Bethlehem.
