The Book of Isaiah: A Study Guide for Jehovah's Witnesses
Isaiah contains more messianic prophecy than almost any other book in the Hebrew Scriptures — and sweeping visions of Jehovah's purpose for the earth. Here is what Jehovah's Witnesses need to know.
Isaiah is one of the most profound books in the Hebrew Scriptures. For Jehovah's Witnesses, it holds special significance — containing more messianic prophecy than almost any other prophetic book, as well as sweeping descriptions of Jehovah's purpose for the earth and his people.
Overview of Isaiah
The book of Isaiah contains 66 chapters — the same number as the books of the entire Bible. It was written by the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, over a ministry spanning more than 40 years during the reigns of four kings of Judah. Isaiah warned of Judah's coming destruction at the hands of Babylon while simultaneously declaring Jehovah's promise of restoration and ultimate salvation for faithful ones.
Key Themes
Jehovah's sovereignty — Isaiah repeatedly declares that Jehovah alone is the true God, sovereign over all nations: "I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. There is no God except me." — Isaiah 45:5
Messianic prophecy — Isaiah contains detailed prophecies about the promised Messiah written 700 years before fulfillment, including the suffering servant chapters of 52 and 53 — quoted extensively in the Christian Greek Scriptures.
Paradise earth — Isaiah chapters 11, 35, and 65 describe the paradise earth Jehovah promises: peaceful animals, the end of sickness and death, and Jehovah's name known throughout the earth.
Key Verses
"Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be anxious, for I am your God. I will fortify you, yes, I will help you, I will really hold on to you with my right hand of righteousness." — Isaiah 41:10
"Those hoping in Jehovah will regain power. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not tire out." — Isaiah 40:31
