Understanding the context of the Sermon on the Mount

I've been reading Matthew 5–7 slowly this week and I keep hitting verses that feel almost impossible — "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Or "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out."How much of this is hyperbole? How much is literal? I'd love to hear how others approach passages like this that seem to demand the impossible.
