# Why Jehovah's name matters Many translations have removed God's personal name from the Scriptures, replacing it with titles like "the LORD." But Jehovah's name appears nearly 7,000 times in the original Hebrew text. Why does that matter? ## The name reveals identity Psalms 83:18 states plainly: "May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth." A name is more than a label — it identifies a person. Removing Jehovah's name obscures the very identity of the one we are meant to know. Exodus 3:15 records Jehovah's own words: "This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation." Jehovah did not authorize anyone to remove his name. ## Knowing the name matters for life Jesus made knowledge of Jehovah central to eternal life. John 17:3 records his prayer: "This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ." You cannot truly know someone whose name you refuse to use. Romans 10:13 underscores the point: "Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved." ## The future hope Jehovah's purpose includes restoring his name to its rightful honor. Revelation 21:3-4 describes the outcome: "the tent of God is with mankind... He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more."
