Does Romans 10:13 Prove Jesus Is Jehovah?
A careful look at Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, and Romans 10:13 — examining whether Paul's quote from Joel proves that Jesus is Jehovah.
**A careful look at Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, and Romans 10:13** --- One of the most common arguments used to support the Trinity doctrine goes something like this: > *"Joel 2:32 says that everyone who calls on the name of **Jehovah** will be saved. Paul quotes this verse in Romans 10:13 and applies it to **Jesus**. Therefore, Jesus must be Jehovah."* At first glance, this might seem convincing. But when we examine the context, the original Hebrew text, and the way the Bible consistently distinguishes between God and his Son, a very different picture emerges. --- ## The Verses in Question > **Joel 2:32** *(Hebrew Scriptures)* — *"And everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/29/2#v=29:2:32) > **Acts 2:21** *(Peter quoting Joel at Pentecost)* — *"And everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/44/2#v=44:2:21) > **Romans 10:13** *(Paul quoting Joel)* — *"For 'everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.'"* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/45/10#v=45:10:13) The question is: When Paul and Peter quoted Joel, were they saying Jesus *is* Jehovah? Or were they making a different point entirely? --- ## Point 1: The Divine Name Was Removed from Greek Manuscripts Here's something most people don't realize: the original Hebrew text of Joel 2:32 contains the divine name — the Tetragrammaton (יהוה, YHWH). However, when later copyists produced Greek manuscripts of the New Testament, they replaced God's personal name with the Greek word *Kyrios* (Lord). This wasn't something the original Bible writers did. The New World Translation appendix explains: > **NWT Study Bible, Appendix C3** — *"Although existing Greek manuscripts use the term 'the Lord' (ho Kyrios) here, there are good reasons for using the divine name in the main text... four of these occurrences are in quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures, where the divine name occurs in the original Hebrew."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org) Even scholars outside of Jehovah's Witnesses have acknowledged this. J.N. Darby's *Holy Scriptures* (1949) includes a footnote on Acts 2:21 that says: "'Jehovah.'" The *Scofield Reference Bible* (1909) similarly notes on Acts 2:39: "Jehovah. Joel 2.32." So when Paul quoted Joel 2:32, he was quoting a passage about **Jehovah** — not making a statement that Jesus *is* Jehovah. --- ## Point 2: Jesus Is the Means of Access to Jehovah Let's look at the context of Romans chapter 10: - **Verse 9** — *"If you publicly declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and exercise faith in your heart that God raised him up from the dead, you will be saved."* - **Verse 13** — *"For 'everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.'"* - **Verse 14** — *"However, how will they call on him if they have not put faith in him?"* Notice the flow of Paul's argument. He's explaining that salvation comes from Jehovah, but access to Jehovah is now through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the *means* by which we approach God — not God himself. This harmonizes with what Paul wrote elsewhere: > **1 Corinthians 8:6** — *"There is actually to us **one God, the Father**, from whom all things are... and **one Lord, Jesus Christ**, through whom all things are."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/46/8#v=46:8:6) Paul consistently distinguishes between "God the Father" and "Lord Jesus Christ." If he believed they were the same person, why make this distinction? --- ## Point 3: Jesus' Name Means "Jehovah Saves" This is a detail many overlook. The name Jesus (Hebrew: *Yeshua*) literally means "Jehovah Is Salvation" or "Jehovah Saves." When we call on the name of Jesus, we're calling on the one whose very name points to **Jehovah** as the source of salvation. The agent isn't the sender. Jesus is the appointed channel through whom Jehovah provides salvation — but that doesn't make Jesus and Jehovah the same person. > **The Watchtower** — *"Even though it is now done through Jesus Christ the Son of God, yet it is upon the name of Jehovah that fallen, sinful human creatures must call for everlasting salvation."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1974885) --- ## Point 4: What About Acts 4:12 and Isaiah 43:11? Some combine these two verses: - **Isaiah 43:11** — *"Besides me there is no savior."* - **Acts 4:12** — *"There is no salvation in anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven... by which we must get saved."* The argument is: "Jehovah is the only savior. Jesus is called savior. Therefore Jesus = Jehovah." But this ignores how Jehovah has always worked through **agents**. Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, Jehovah raised up human "saviors" to deliver Israel: > **Nehemiah 9:27** — *"You gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their enemies."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/16/9#v=16:9:27) Judges like Othniel and Ehud are called "saviors" (Judges 3:9, 15). Did that make them Jehovah? Of course not. They were agents acting on Jehovah's behalf. Jesus is the ultimate agent — but agency doesn't equal identity. --- ## Point 5: Hebrews 1:1-2 Settles the Matter If Jesus is Jehovah, then it was Jesus who spoke through the prophets like Joel. But notice what Hebrews says: > **Hebrews 1:1-2** — *"God, who long ago spoke on many occasions and in many ways to our forefathers by means of the prophets, has at the end of these days spoken to us by means of a Son."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/58/1#v=58:1:1-58:1:2) The one who spoke through the prophets (Jehovah) now speaks through someone **distinct** — his Son. If Jesus were Jehovah, this verse would make no sense. It would mean Jehovah now speaks through... himself? The Bible keeps these two persons clearly distinct. --- ## Conclusion Romans 10:13 doesn't prove Jesus is Jehovah. It proves that: 1. Salvation originates with Jehovah 2. Access to Jehovah is now through Jesus Christ 3. Jesus' very name glorifies Jehovah as the source of salvation The agent isn't the sender. The channel isn't the source. Jesus is the way *to* the Father — not the Father himself. As Jesus said: > **John 14:6** — *"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."* | [Read on WOL](https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/b/r1/lp-e/nwtsty/43/14#v=43:14:6) --- ## Keep Studying Want to learn more about what the Bible really teaches about God and Jesus?
